Scammers pretend to be from organizations you know
Scammers often contact you while impersonating government officials. They may use the names of real agencies, such as the Social Security Administration (SSA), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), or Medicare. They may also make up official-sounding agency names. Some pose as staff from companies you are familiar with, including utility providers, tech firms, or even charitable organizations soliciting donations.
They use technology to alter the phone numbers displayed on caller ID. As a result, the names and numbers you see may be fake.
